Part of my business is the installation and setup of "starband".
That's 2 way satellite internet access.
At this time it's a bit pricey ($500+ US......installed+$69 a month)
They (the starband folks) promise at least 150k upload and 500k download...........through careful tuning (focusing of the dish)
I've managed to get download rates in the realm of 1.6-7Mbps.
There's 2 other companies here that are setting up shop and offering competing satellite service, and once they're running I'm sure prices will come WAY down.
BTW: this area is the sticks too, and many folks have to pay "long distance phone rates" for internet access. thinking of $300-$400 a month plus the usual $20 per month to the ISP...to those folks starband is quite cheap.
Over in France they have a similiar satellite service called "Gilat"
That might be an option to rural european users at some time in the hopefully near future
