That did the trick, we're just about there. I can get into X now but the
mouse isn't working. The laptop has a trackball mouse, but I think I read
some where that all mice were ps2. XF86Config.in says /dev/mouse. I tried
to change it to /dev/psaux. That didn't work. Any suggestions?

A similar problem occurred, time ago, to morph@softhome.net:

I found the trick was to uncomment the Video Ram and Clocks settings
for the Device 'Generic VGA' - and change the Device used by the Screen
section to be Generic VGA - after which it worked!

Follow this istructions, editing the file /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/XF86Config.in
and re-do xf86config.
