Background documentation Installation Options

During installation of SAP Web Application Server (Web AS), you have three options for how to set up User Management Engine (UME):

·        Add-in installation

If you install SAP Web ASwith both ABAP and Java, UME is automatically set up to use the ABAP user management of the same Web AS installation. PFCG roles from the ABAP system are displayed as groups in the Java user administration tools.

Note

For performance reasons, this option should only be used for systems that do not contain a very large amount of users. For more details, see SAP Note 740829.

·        Standalone installation (UME with ABAP user management)

If you install SAP Web AS with Java only, you have the option of setting up UME to use the user management of a different SAP Web AS ABAP.

·        Standalone installation (UME with database)

If you install SAP Web AS with Java only, you have the option of setting up UME to use the database of the J2EE Engine for storing all user management data.

If you choose either the add-in installation or standalone installation with ABAP user management, you cannot change the data source configuration after installation. For more information, see SAP Note 718383. If you wish to be able to change the data source configuration after installation, then install the standalone installation with database as data source. For example, If you want to use an LDAP directory, install SAP Web AS with UME using a database. Then change the configuration as described in Configuring UME to Use an LDAP Server as Data Source.

If you are installing SAP Enterprise Portal we recommend that you install one of the standalone installations and not an add-in installation.
