Background documentation Structure of the portalapp.xml

The root element is the application element. The application element may have an attribute alias, containing a comma-separated list of aliases on the portal application. These aliases can be used instead of the real application name, the name of the containing PAR file, when the application and portal components are referenced.

The concept of aliases is meant to be used for reasons of backward compatibility. It effectively reserves the name a different application may want to use.
