Final Testing

• Before placing the machine in service for the first time, you should check your defenses. The best way to check your security is by trying to break into it. Attack the system and see if there are obvious holes or deficiencies you have missed. Note that this step will probably have to be repeated a couple of times. Scan, fix, scan fix until you have cleared all of the alerts.

• Check the reaction of your IDS, IP logger, portscan detector.

• Use the very tools that the cracker would use, and attack from within and without.
