Prior to version 0.4.0, the HTML Parser in lxml does not properly handle context-switching for special HTML tags such as `<svg>`, `<math>` and `<noscript>`. This behavior deviates from how web browsers parse and interpret such tags. Specifically, content in CSS comments is ignored by lxml_html_clean but may be interpreted differently by web browsers, enabling malicious scripts to bypass the cleaning process. This vulnerability could lead to Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) attacks, compromising the security of users relying on lxml_html_clean in default configuration for sanitizing untrusted HTML content. Users employing the HTML cleaner in a security-sensitive context should upgrade to lxml 0.4.0, which addresses this issue. As a temporary mitigation, users can configure lxml_html_clean with the following settings to prevent the exploitation of this vulnerability. Via `remove_tags`, one may specify tags to remove - their content is moved to their parents' tags. Via `kill_tags`, one may specify tags to be removed completely. Via `allow_tags`, one may restrict the set of permissible tags, excluding context-switching tags like `<svg>`, `<math>` and `<noscript>`.","title":"Description of the CVE"},{"category":"legal_disclaimer","text":"CSAF 2.0 data is provided by SUSE under the Creative Commons License 4.0 with Attribution (CC-BY-4.0).","title":"Terms of use"}],"publisher":{"category":"vendor","contact_details":"https://www.suse.com/support/security/contact/","name":"SUSE Product Security Team","namespace":"https://www.suse.com/"},"references":[{"category":"external","summary":"CVE-2024-52595","url":"https://www.suse.com/security/cve/CVE-2024-52595"},{"category":"external","summary":"SUSE Security Ratings","url":"https://www.suse.com/support/security/rating/"},{"category":"external","summary":"SUSE Bug 1233541 for CVE-2024-52595","url":"https://bugzilla.suse.com/1233541"}],"title":"SUSE CVE CVE-2024-52595","tracking":{"current_release_date":"2025-02-16T04:01:29Z","generator":{"date":"2024-11-22T03:49:18Z","engine":{"name":"cve-database.git:bin/generate-csaf-vex.pl","version":"1"}},"id":"CVE-2024-52595","initial_release_date":"2024-11-22T03:49:18Z","revision_history":[{"date":"2024-11-22T03:49:18Z","number":"2","summary":"Current version"},{"date":"2025-01-01T00:26:18Z","number":"3","summary":"Current version"},{"date":"2025-01-29T03:54:54Z","number":"4","summary":"Current version"},{"date":"2025-02-14T04:08:53Z","number":"5","summary":"Current version"},{"date":"2025-02-16T04:01:29Z","number":"6","summary":"Current version"}],"status":"interim","version":"6"}}}
