In affected versions Envoy does not restrict the set of certificates it accepts from the peer, either as a TLS client or a TLS server, to only those certificates that contain the necessary extendedKeyUsage (id-kp-serverAuth and id-kp-clientAuth, respectively). This means that a peer may present an e-mail certificate (e.g. id-kp-emailProtection), either as a leaf certificate or as a CA in the chain, and it will be accepted for TLS. This is particularly bad when combined with the issue described in pull request #630, in that it allows a Web PKI CA that is intended only for use with S/MIME, and thus exempted from audit or supervision, to issue TLS certificates that will be accepted by Envoy. As a result Envoy will trust upstream certificates that should not be trusted. There are no known workarounds to this issue. Users are advised to upgrade.","title":"Description of the CVE"},{"category":"legal_disclaimer","text":"CSAF 2.0 data is provided by SUSE under the Creative Commons License 4.0 with Attribution (CC-BY-4.0).","title":"Terms of use"}],"publisher":{"category":"vendor","contact_details":"https://www.suse.com/support/security/contact/","name":"SUSE Product Security Team","namespace":"https://www.suse.com/"},"references":[{"category":"external","summary":"CVE-2022-21657","url":"https://www.suse.com/security/cve/CVE-2022-21657"},{"category":"external","summary":"SUSE Security Ratings","url":"https://www.suse.com/support/security/rating/"},{"category":"external","summary":"SUSE Bug 1196429 for CVE-2022-21657","url":"https://bugzilla.suse.com/1196429"}],"title":"SUSE CVE CVE-2022-21657","tracking":{"current_release_date":"2025-02-16T07:45:06Z","generator":{"date":"2023-02-15T03:29:10Z","engine":{"name":"cve-database.git:bin/generate-csaf-vex.pl","version":"1"}},"id":"CVE-2022-21657","initial_release_date":"2023-02-15T03:29:10Z","revision_history":[{"date":"2023-02-15T03:29:10Z","number":"2","summary":"Current version"},{"date":"2025-01-01T03:17:35Z","number":"3","summary":"Current version"},{"date":"2025-02-15T03:57:23Z","number":"4","summary":"Current version"},{"date":"2025-02-16T07:45:06Z","number":"5","summary":"Current version"}],"status":"interim","version":"5"}}}
