A popmedia control sequence can allow the malicious execution of executable file formats registered in the X desktop share MIME types (/usr/share/applications). The control sequence defers unknown file types to the handle_unknown_media() function, which executes xdg-open against the filename specified in the sequence. The use of xdg-open for all unknown file types allows executable file formats with a registered shared MIME type to be executed. An attacker can achieve remote code execution by introducing an executable file and a plain text file containing the control sequence through a fake software project (e.g., in Git or a tarball). When the control sequence is rendered (such as with cat), the executable file will be run.","title":"Description of the CVE"},{"category":"legal_disclaimer","text":"CSAF 2.0 data is provided by SUSE under the Creative Commons License 4.0 with Attribution (CC-BY-4.0).","title":"Terms of use"}],"publisher":{"category":"vendor","contact_details":"https://www.suse.com/support/security/contact/","name":"SUSE Product Security Team","namespace":"https://www.suse.com/"},"references":[{"category":"external","summary":"CVE-2018-20167","url":"https://www.suse.com/security/cve/CVE-2018-20167"},{"category":"external","summary":"SUSE Security Ratings","url":"https://www.suse.com/support/security/rating/"},{"category":"external","summary":"SUSE Bug 1119819 for CVE-2018-20167","url":"https://bugzilla.suse.com/1119819"}],"title":"SUSE CVE CVE-2018-20167","tracking":{"current_release_date":"2025-02-18T06:51:56Z","generator":{"date":"2023-02-15T04:21:24Z","engine":{"name":"cve-database.git:bin/generate-csaf-vex.pl","version":"1"}},"id":"CVE-2018-20167","initial_release_date":"2023-02-15T04:21:24Z","revision_history":[{"date":"2023-02-15T04:21:24Z","number":"2","summary":"Current version"},{"date":"2025-01-01T07:15:11Z","number":"3","summary":"Current version"},{"date":"2025-02-15T07:57:06Z","number":"4","summary":"Current version"},{"date":"2025-02-18T06:51:56Z","number":"5","summary":"Current version"}],"status":"interim","version":"5"}}}
