Actually, band in question is allowed also  for radioamateurs,
at least in Finnland (Propably in whole europe because standardization
efforts.) Though frequency allocation tables do not imply specefically,
whether radioamateur usage is banned from this frequency. 
Hiperlan operates in 5150-5350 MHz	<200mW EIRP only allowed indoors
		     5470-5725 MHz	< 1W EIRP

Data tranfer speed for hiperlan is faster, 19Mbit/s for type 1, 25Mbit/s
for type 2, 25Mbit/s for hiperaccess and 155Mbit/s for hiperlink.
Worth implementig would be type 2 for common usage, and hiperlink for
point-2-point. According to ETSI hiperlan type 2 has been desingned 
" to provide local wireless access to IP, ATM, UMTS infrastructurenetworks
by both moving and stationary terminals that interact with access point
which, in turn , usually are connected to an IP, ATM, UMTS backbone
network.". Hiperlan also supports handover and Qos (quality of service). 
It would seem to have been designed to allow also a way of implementing
handheld telecommunication devices in cities (compare to cell phones). 
I've heard rumours that somewhere they would be considering skipping UMTS
and building hiperlan infrastructure instead. It would be nice to be able
to connect to UMTS network anyway... 

I have to admit that i have no idea of US official plans for such
systems. Usually these machines do not work in both places. Think of a
cell phone for instance (900/1800 in europe, 1900 in us). what seems to be
though is that mentioned ieee WLAN standard is allocated in european radio
frequencies. 
ieee standard seems to be quite a bit more specifically one use system.

Whether you could use ETSI standard in US, depends on your frequency
allocation (in case you are not going to do commercial things) and if
band is not available, your willingness to risk charges (quite small
propably for indoor system with optimized power as it would not emit "RFI"
outside and thus could not be measured). Off course possibility to
"illegally" using bands depends largely on official usage of the band
(compare radioamateur and military)...

Could someone check US regulations and possible plans etc?
